Would you like to join me in creating an online MasterMind group for those looking for structure and accountability? I'm thinking if we set a time each week that we connect in some manner (up for discussion) we will be forced to set out our goals, what actions we plan on taking that week and then have to own-up to what we did and did not do.

Anyone else interested?

My problems are:

  • I haven't had to work on a day-to-day basis for over 12 years, since I was in my early to mid-40's. Not good for someone with the following attributes!
  • I am a bit ADD, so I start something only to have something else distract me. I end up feeling overwhelmed because so many things are "in the fire."
  • I want to "do it now" - which sounds good but leads to me jumping into things only to find I haven't thought it through thoroughly and it adds to my feelings of being overwhelmed
  • I've become unbelievably disorganized - in the past I at least found time periodically to set things straight, but no more.
  • I am very undisciplined (that's hard to admit, but it is true). Only when under pressure do I focus in and get it done. And even then, if there's an "out" (filing an extension for my taxes) or no immediate serious consequences, I find reasons to do what I want to do, not what I should be doing. Again, in the past I was better at it.

It's difficult to put all of my negative qualities on paper and out there for others to see. I've been aware of all of these traits in myself, but maybe this will be a turning point. Writing down not just goals (which I've done before without much success), but also the negative qualities I see in myself that keep me from working towards my goals may be the "missing link."

One thing I've come to realize is that not having anything to get up and "do" is my biggest problem. What do they say about men who retire driving their wives crazy - they have no structure to their days. That's me. Before I had to be at the office, the kids were young (now both are at college) and I had to deal with their needs, there were no options. I need that in my life again, in some manner.

    Mary -

Congrats on getting this started. Please keep us posted on your progress/challenges/insights with the group.

A way I’ve seen a phone-based accountability Mastermind work well is quick weekly check-ins. (1) This is what I said I’d do. (2) This is what I did. (3) This is what I learned from it. (4) This is what I’m going to do next week.

Don’t allow excuses or blame (that includes blaming yourself). Just own whatever you did or didn’t do, and make plans to change it if you need to.

I suggest that as a group you commit to a specific time, for example, all agree to try it out for 6 weeks and then check in to see if it’s working or not working. If someone fails to make the meetings, how many chances will the group give them? Work out some of the details in advance and then keep true to what you want to happen. Otherwise, you can degenerate quickly.

A mastermind is a precious thing. Cherish it. Protect it. And above all, use it!

    Hi,

I am part of a mastermind group for accountability/re related and ebiz matters and we teleconference every 2 weeks. We formed at an Atlanta mastermind last year and we are still together. I find it’s great although last week I slipped on my comitments and couldn’t make the meeting, however that’s normal for all of us and we know we have to work extra hard at fulfiling or attempting to fulfil our comitments for the next round.

I am very much like yourself. I don’t mind being a part of another group that is online or telephone. I sometimes can’t make the meetings due to commitments that can’t be moved but in general attend at least every month.
